Every day I speak to many MLM distributors and other existing MLM’ers, and I am appalled, shocked even, to hear that they are still “old school” and rely on warm marketing as their primary marketing tool. Guess what? It's not their fault, as many companies promote this practice to their members. These upline sponsors are still telling their new members to go out to make a list of friends and family. They follow that technique themselves as they too never learned another way to prospect. It's like the blind mouse leading a blind gang of mice! As a result, they offer ZERO up-to-date MARKETING TRAINING to their new distributors.

The reality of approaching your friends and relatives in order to build your downline in your opportunity is that it only works for a handful of distributors. Perhaps those with exceptional people skills can convince their audience to do whatever they want. For the rest of the members, you have to be thick skinned dealing with rejection and you should also ask yourself is that how you want to market your business opportunity? I feel sorry for home business owners in that company, since this method rarely works and sometimes it can destroy friendships or alienate you from those you hold dear. To me, it is not worth the risk losing your friends experimenting with a recruiting method that is ALREADY proven to not work for the majority of marketers.

However, warm marketing traps new distributors since it is an “easy” way to approach your new network marketing business. No new skills are required, no investment is involved, and you don't need to learn anything new -- just go and talk to them. No doubt you realize that in today's world that's not a serious or professional way to build your business, or any business at all frankly. It has been many years since anyone could talk about a multilevel marketing opportunity and have instant sign ups immediately. In 2009, the online marketing world has changed dramatically over the past 3 years. We live in a totally different world and if a distributor wants to succeed in this new environment they have to change as well.

Today, there are great alternatives in order to recruit new members and acquire new customers for your network marketing product. These are prospecting methods that really work and can help someone build a big downline and start making an income. And no, they are not harder than the traditional methods that brought a bad name to the industry. Actually, it's much harder to go after your friends and relatives, facing rejection from people you know, and jeopardizing your relationship with them.

However, you don't need to rely on online techniques to promote exclusively. And while you need to have some knowledge to do these new marketing techniques, trust me, it's a lot easier and you carry less emotional burden than going through your warm market.
